The barbecue is known as one of the largest single-day school fundraisers in the state of North Carolina, benefitting Unionville Elementary School. It takes place the first Friday of every November.

Ok so I got greedy and ordered the chicken hot bbq wings, fries and Mac & cheese. The chips come sprinkled with a tasty (though salty) herb mix, the mac & cheese was creamy n cheesy like we love it but I was disappointed with the wings that a grilled then fried then covered in a weird tangy sauce (did not taste like hot bbq) I had to send it back and ask for the same thing without it.

The first Unionville BBQ was in 1949. The first ticket cost was $1.00. Students, parents, staff and community members all contributed cabbage for slaw, live chickens for stew and vegetables. The first year 325 pounds of pork was cooked over an open fire in a field (today - 15,000 pounds cooked) It was cooked over open coals and 15 foot shovels.

UNIONVILLE -- Unionville Elementary Principal Dr. Sharyn VonCannon said the school ordered 12,500 pounds of pork for the 73rd annual Unionville Barbeque and it wasn't enough. The good news is the popular event sold out early, but a lot of people had to be turned away.
